Sculptor, stonemason, stone cutter
Born in Manchester. He was the son of George Stocks (born c.1817 in Manchester), a stonemason. Robert started out as a stonemason and carver before moving to London and attending the Royal Academy Schools. He entered into business in London and worked in the St Pancras and Lambeth areas before moving to Devon by 1891. His son, also Robert (born c.1876 in Kennington) worked as his father's assistant. At some stage before 1911, Robert ceased working for himself and returned to London where he was employed as a stone carver.
