Charles John Thomas Smith
Born 1838
Active: 1860 - 1891
Country of birth and death: England
Sculptor
Born in Marylebone, London. He was the son of the sculptor, Charles Raymond Smith (c.1798-1888). Charles John studied at the Royal Academy Schools around 1860 and then probably worked in his father's studio. He does not appear to have exhibited at the Royal Academy. However tracing his activities is complicated by the variety of ways in which he gave his name: 'Charles John Smith', 'John T Smith' and 'Charles R. Smith' (the R presumably being for Raymond).
After his father's death, Charles John continued to live and, presumably, work at 246 Marylebone Road. Two of his sisters (Linda and Kate) also resided with him around 1891, they were living on their own means.
