Sculptor, teacher of sculpture
Born in Sorrento, Italy. He was the son of James Havard Thomas and an Italian mother, Sofia. George attended Clifton College and then worked with his father as well as studying under him at the Slade School, between October 1914 and April 1915 and 1919 and 1920. During the First World War George served as an officer (a captain) and was awarded the Military Cross. In 1920 he was appointed Assistant Lecturer at the Slade School and he taught there till his death in 1933.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts from 1919 till 1934 (one work was shown posthumously). George Havard was commissioned to make war memorials for Waterhead, Heywood, Manchester (unveiled in April 1920), Milnrow, Lancashire (unveiled in 1924), and Abertillery, Gwent (unveiled in 1926). He also made an equestrian statue of Sir Harcourt Butler, Governor of the United Provinces, India c.1931. Other works included portraits and statuettes which are represented in the collections of Tate ('Aphrodite', c.1928-30, limestone) and Manchester Art Galleries ('Head of a boy'). In his obituary in 'The Times', George Havard was described as 'A modest man, very sound in his methods, Thomas will be greatly missed as a teacher.'
