Jeweller, silversmith, teacher of jewellery making
Born in Barnstaple, Devon. He was the younger brother of Ethel Mairet (1872-1952), née Partridge (married first to Ananda K Coomeraswamy, then to Philip Mairet). Ethel became a very well-known weaver, dyer and textile designer as well as the author of several publications on hand-weaving.
Frederick studied in Birmingham and shared lodgings with the painter and stained glass designer, Henry Payne. After completing his studies he taught at Camberwell School of Art for a few years (c.1907-9). Then he set himself up as an artist and art jeweller (before 1911). Frederick was married to May Partridge, an artist enameller (born c.1881 in Harborne, Staffordshire). The Victoria and Albert Museum owns two works by him, a brooch and a ring both dating from 1928 (M.14-1976 and M.15-1976). There is also a brooch dating from about 1930 in the collection of Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery (1981M400).
