John 'Jack' Linehan

Born in Gillabbey, Cork City. He was christened on 26th February 1865 at St Finbar’s South RC Church, Cork. John was the son of James Linehan and Hannah Lynch. Sometime around 1880 John began studying at the Crawford School of Art in Cork (known as the 'Central School' at this time). He was awarded a Free Studentship to the London School of Art Wood Carving, South Kensington for two successive years c.1885, Linehan received some additional financial assistance from the Executive Committee of the Cork Exhibition. In 1888 Linehan won a prize at the Crawford School of Art, but seems to have returned to London by the early 1890s. He married Florence Hartwell (born 1872) at Holy Trinity Parish Church, Tooting, London on 24 August 1903. Florence was the sister of the sculptor, Charles Leonard Hartwell RA (1873-1951).
Between 1900-30 Linehan taught modelling and wood carving to a range of students including carvers, plasterers and gilders at Camberwell School of Art. In 1937 he collaborated with David Evans on a frieze for the main facade of Wandsworth Town Hall depicting events in Wandsworth's history (built 1935-7, architect Edward A Hunt).
