Headmaster of art school, pottery painter
Born in Derby, Derbyshire. He was the son of John Brownsword (born c.1833), railway labourer and gardner. John Joseph started his career as a painter of pottery and then in the 1890s trained as a teacher. He obtained a post in teaching at a school in Worcester and then became headmaster of Wolverhampton School of Art in 1905.
