Born in Streatham, Surrey (London). Her parents, (Jean Pierre) Gustavus Dressler (a general merchant born c.1817 in Frankfurt, Germany) and Philippine Henrietta Suzanne d'Huc de Monsegou (born in Marseille, France in 1831) were naturalized British citizens. Gustavus died in 1863 leaving effects valued at around £30,000. Ada's younger brother was the sculptor and pottery manufacturer, Conrad Dressler (1856-1940). Her sisters Alice (Mimi) (c.1853-1938) and Clotilde (1862-c.1957) may have also studied art.
