He was the grandson of George Wyon (b. 1771) and the son of John George Wyon (b. 1806) who married Alice Arkinstall. This branch of the family remained in the west midlands. Edward worked for the Birmingham mint of Heaton & Sons. Then, having supervised the construction of the first modern mint in China, at Canton (Guangzhou), during 1887–8, stayed on as head of the operative department. [see Attwood (2004)]

Apprenticed to Ralph Heaton of the Birmingham Mint. Sent to supervise the erection of a Mint for the Burmese Government in 1864, then for the Republic of Columbia and finally for the Chineese Government. See Forrer, vol. 6, (1916), pp. 585-586.
