Born in Marylebone, London. Younger brother of Joseph Shepherd Wyon (1836–1873) and Alfred Benjamin Wyon (1837–1884). He joined the firm in 1872. The three brothers followed their father successively as chief engraver of seals. Allan Wyon completed and brought to publication his brother Alfred's 'The Great Seals of England' (1887). He died at his home, 33 Parkhill Road, Hampstead. [see Attwood (2004)]

Shortly before the death of his brother Joseph Shepherd Wyon [1836-1873], Allan Wyon entered 'the Die-sinking business, inherited from their father Benjamin [1802-1858], and founded in London by Thomas Wyon senior [1767-1830]' to 'assist' his second brother Alfred Benjamin Wyon. Forrer notes that Wyon joined the business of his brothers Joseph Shepherd and Alfred Benjamin Wyon in 1872. He was succeeded in the business by his son Allan Gairdner Wyon. He was appointed as 'Chief Engraver of Her Majesty's seals on 20th June 1884'. Wyon joined the Numismatic Society, London, in 1885. He was joint author of the 'Great Seals of England' with his brother Alfred Benjamin Wyon. Forrer lists numerous seals and medals that Wyon engraved, or cut the dies for, from c. 1882 to 1899.
