Born in Cork, Ireland. Died at his home in Cheyne Walk, London. In 1859, he submitted a successful design, executed by Leonard Charles Wyon for The Turner Medal, commissioned by the Royal Academy. The medal relates to a bequest of £20,000 from Turner's estate and: "in conformity with the will of the late J. M. W. Turner" for "a medal to be called 'Turner's medal' equal in value to the Gold medal now given by the Royal Academy be awarded to the best landscape painting at the Biennial Distribution".
