Born at the family home, St John's, Hunter's Lane, Handsworth, Staffordshire. His death was registered in King's Norton, Worcestershire. Eldest son of John Hardman (1811-67). Two of his children joined the business - John Tarleton Hardman, born c.1873 who was a stained glass artist and Gerald James Hardman, born c. 1875, who was an art metal manufacturer.
