Born Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs. He was the son of Ludwig Louis Hartmann Adalbert Jahn (c.1839-1911, born in Thuringia, Germany), china painter, designer and art director. Albert was the brother of Francis H. Aloysius (1871-1967), sculptor and teacher. Albert studied at Hanley School of Art and the National Art Training Schools (Royal College of Art) where he was awarded a travelling scholarship. Between c.1890-1905 Jahn was headmaster of Wolverhampton School of Art. During this time he produced a number of pieces of art jewellery which he sold to the Victoria and Albert Museum. In 1905 he was appointed Headmaster of Sheffield School of Art. He remained there until his retirement in 1925. In 1906 he appointed his brother Francis as Head of Modelling.

These dates are given by Wilkinson in 'Ceramic Artists' (2007), p. 85. Jones also notes that Jahn was the headmaster of the school in 1897: see Jones, 'Historical Sketch', (1897), p. 162 and p. 172. Charles Wheeler suggests that Jahn became headmaster in 1890 and held the post until 1905: see Wheeler, 'Wolverhampton College of Art' in The Birmingham Post (12 June, 1950).
