Pottery painter, teacher, headmaster of art school
Born in Stoke Saint Milborough, Shropshire. His father was George Rhead (born c.1811), potter and pottery painter and his mother was Mary Woolliscroft (born c.1808). George Woolliscroft Rhead Senior started his career as a pottery painter and then moved into teaching. By the late 1880s he had left the pottery industry and was headmaster of Fenton School of Art. Several of his children entered the pottery trade and the oldest son, George Woolliscroft Rhead Junior (see separate entry) became an artist. Rhead Senior retired from teaching before 1900 and died at Laburnum Cottage, Clayton, Staffordshire.
