Sculptor, art teacher
Born in Castleford, Yorkshire which was also the birthplace of Henry Moore. Milsom later described the spoilheaps (or 'slagheaps') created by the coal mining industry as huge sculptural blots on the landscape. He felt his sense of form had been shaped by growing up in this environment and that it had also left a mark on Henry Moore.
Milsom studied at the Royal College of Art in the late 1930s and the carvings of Eric Gill formed an important inspiration at this time. He went on to teach at Stoke School of Art and then at Cardiff College of Art from about 1950 (he remained in this post until his death in 1976). In the 1950s or 60s Milsom showed work at the Whitechapel Art Gallery. Surviving sculptures from this period include stone carvings which reveal the influence of Henri Gaudier Brzeska and Henry Moore. There is an entry on Milsom in 'Young Artists of Promise' edited by Jack Beddington, Studio publications, London and New York, 1957.
This entry includes information supplied by the artist's son John Milsom.
