Artist, teacher, council member of art society
Born in Woodhouse Eaves, Leicester where she was baptised on 3 August 1883. Ethel was the daughter of Jesse Flint (born c.1857 in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire) an organist and Professor of Music. Flint was an Art Pupil Teacher at the School of Art in Walsall in 1903 and continued her studies until 1911 although she was registered as a teacher in 1909. She worked at Lichfield School of Art from 1913 until her retirement in 1951, and was principal for much of this period. It appears she was also an art mistress at the grammar school (presumed to be in Walsall) as this was her stated occupation in 1939. Flint also served as chairman of the Library and Art Gallery Committee in Walsall. In 1965 a gallery was built as an extension to the existing Central Library and named in her honour. (This has since disappeared as the Garman-Ryan collection, donated by Lady Kathleen Epstein in 1973, was moved to a New Art Gallery constructed in 1999.)
