Born at Kirbymoorside, Pickering, North Yorkshire. Died at Clouds Mere, Wiltshire. Father of Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), author. Brother-in-law to Edward Burne-Jones and Edward Poynter (all three married to MacDonald sisters).
He was a student at Stoke Art School and joint designer (with R. Edgar) of the Facade of the Wedgwood Institute, Burslem 1865 [see Haggar (1953), p. 44]. Kipling was Professor of architectural sculpture at the Jeejeebhoy School of Art, Bombay 1865-75 and Principal, Mayo School of Art, Lahore 1875-93.
