Born New Malden, Surrey. Worked in studio of sculptor, Charles Wheeler, whilst on vacation from Charterhouse School 1937-42. Studied engineering at Christ’s College, Cambridge1942-44, sculpture at Regent St. Polytechnic 1946-47; Royal Academy Schools 1947-52. Fleet Air Arm 1944-46. Assistant to Henry Moore 1951-53. Taught part-time at St. Martin’s School of Art 1953-79. In 1950s, modelled figures and heads in clay and plaster. Visited U.S.A. in 1959, first abstract sculptures in 1960. Awarded Ford Foundation Travel Grant 1959; 1st Paris Biennale Sculpture Prize 1959.
Exhibitions include: Institute of Contemporary Arts, London 1955; Galleria del Naviglio, Milan 1956 (solo); Gimpel Fils 1957 (solo); AC 1957, 58, 60, 61; LCC 60; Sonsbeek, Arnhem 1958; The Religious Theme, Tate Gallery, London 1958; Marlborough New London Gallery 1961; Whitechapel Gallery, London 1963 (solo).
Collections include: Tate Gallery; Arts Council; Aberdeen Art Gallery; Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto.
