Teacher of modelling, silversmith, enameller, painter and author
Born in Birmingham. Hatton taught modelling at the Central School of the Municipal School of Art in Birmingham during the 1880s. By 1891 he had moved to Newcastle-upon-Tyne where he continued to teach art and wrote a number of books on drawing and design. In 1899 Hatton formed the Newcastle Handicrafts Company and exhibited a silver and enamel bowl at the Handicrafts Guild Exhibition 1901. There is an article about him in volume 17 of the 'Decorative Arts Society Journal'.
The Hatton Gallery was founded in 1925 in his honour. By this stage he was a professor at the King Edward VII School of Art, Armstrong College, Durham University. Following its formal constitution, the Hatton maintained its relationship with the School of Art, which subsequently became the Department of Fine Art, University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
