Born in Liverpool, Lancashire. The son of Alfred Waterhouse, a quaker merchant. Trained in Manchester under Richard Lane (3 April 1795 – 25 May 1880). Waterhouse ran a practice in Manchester for twelve years before establishing himself in London in 1865. His outstanding commissions include Manchester Town Hall (1868-77) and the Natural History Museum London (1873-81).
