Charles E. Thomas ARBSA
Born 7 October 1883
Died 1981
Active: 1901 - 1950
Country of birth and death: England
Sculptor, medallist, die-sinker, teacher, illustrator, calligrapher
Born in Birmingham, Warwick. He studied and then taught at Birmingham School of Art. Thomas was an authority on Chinese objets d'art, ivory carving, jade and penmanship. He was also a great collector, and amassed a remarkable collection illustrating the history of writing which included examples of his own penmanship. Thomas also collected photographs of die-struck silver articles from around the world to show the variety of uses of these dies.
However his interests were not confined to art, Thomas studied botany and undertook significant private research into the habitat of rare plants from the British Isles. George Ravensworth Hughes (former Assistant and then full Clerk of of The Goldsmiths' Company, 1919-39 and 1939-53) considered him: 'an unrecognised genius, versatile, elusive and humble.'
