Francis H. Aloysius Jahn
Born 1871
Died 1967
Active: 1896 - 1933
Sculptor, teacher of modelling
Born in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. He was the son of Ludwig Louis Hartmann Adalbert Jahn (c.1839-1911, born in Thuringia, Germany), china painter, designer and art director. His brother was Albert Carl Christian (c.1865-c.1935), art school headmaster. Francis started out as a potter's modeller in Stoke but was awarded a National Scholarship to the National Art Training Schools (Royal College of Art) in 1891. He then went on to become a teacher of modelling. In 1906 his brother, Albert appointed him as Head of Modelling at Sheffield School of Art, a position he held for some years.
The information about Jahn's studies is taken from 'A List of National Scholars (Art) from February 1885 to July 1891', 1892 [C.6721] Thirty-ninth report of the Department of Science and Art of the Committee of Council on Education, with appendices, Appendix B, p. 325.
