Born in Shropshire. Aged 6 his family moved to Australia, he was sent back to England aged 19 to study at the Royal College of Art. He also studied at Goldsmiths'. In 1901 he was appointed as a teacher at Exeter College of Art and then in 1903 was appointed as an art master in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He returned to the UK c.1912 but seems to have continued to live in South Africa.
