Born in Paddington, London. She was the daughter of William Smith (born c.1829 in Leamington Spa) a chemist and druggist in 1901. Gertrude studied art either at Finsbury Technical College or the Royal Academy Schools where she met Gilbert Bayes. They were married in 1906.
