Born in Birmingham, Warwickshire. He was the grandson of William Tonks (born c.1797 in Little Aston, Staffordshire), and son of William Henry (born c.1829), both brass founders and owners (or part owners) of a large firm of brass founders in Birmingham. William Henry Junior joined the company before his father's death in 1899.
