Albert Arthur Toft FRBS
Born 3 June 1862
Died 18 December 1949
Active: 1883 - 1949
Country of birth and death: England
Sculptor, potter's modeller, teacher, author
Born in Handsworth, Staffordshire. (Handsworth was in Staffordshire at the time he was born and was transferred to Birmingham, Warwickshire in 1911). He served an apprenticeship as a potter's modeller at Josiah Wedgwood and Son's where his father, Charles Toft (c.1832-1909) was principal modeller. Albert studied first at art schools in Hanley and Newcastle-under-Lyme. Then in 1881 he won a scholarship to the National Art Training School (later Royal College of Art), South Kensington where he became one of Lanteri's early pupils.
Albert's early works were medallions and portrait busts, later he received commissions for statuary and architectural reliefs. Stocker (2004) considers Toft's career suffered because of the abundance of highly talented sculptors who were slightly older than him. He died in a nursing home, at 22 Downview Road, Worthing, Sussex.
A photograph of Toft and a very short notice about his career appeared in 'The Stone Trades Journal' Vol XXX, no. 9, March 1911, p. 650.
Wealth at death: £16,367 18s. 2d.
Probate date: 4 March 1950
