Sculptor, architectural sculptor
Born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire. He was the son of John Kitson, a tailor. His older brothers were John William Kitson (1845-88) an architectural sculptor who was the first of the family to move to the USA and Samuel James Kitson (1848-1906) who studied and worked in Rome before moving to the USA. Henry Hudson worked in the studio of John William and perhaps also Samuel James. Between 1882 and c.1884-85 Henry studied in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts under the sculptors Jean-Marie Bonnassieux and Dumont, he also enrolled in the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs studying under Millet and Ganter. In 1893 he married one of his former students, the sculptor Theo Alice Ruggles (1871-1932). Another brother was Robert Lewellyn Kitson (no dates) a water colour painter who is also said to have lived in America. Henry died in Tyringham, Massachusetts, USA. There is quite a lot of information about the Kitson family available online including an entry about Henry's career on Wikipedia which was written by a descendant http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Hudson_Kitson (accessed 17 December 2013).
