Sophia Rosamond Praeger HRHA
Born 15 April 1867
Died 17 April 1954
Active: 1882 - 1953
Country of birth and death: Ireland
Sculptor, painter, designer, illustrator, author, folklorist, poet, environmentalist
Born in Holywood, County Down. Praeger was the daughter of Willem Emil Praeger, a Dutch immigrant who joined the Belfast based family linen company established by his uncle in 1860. Sophia's brother was the naturalist, Robert Lloyd Praeger (1865-1953). She studied at the Belfast School of Art under the painter, George Trobridge from 1882 and joined the Rambler's Sketching Club in 1886. Two years later she enrolled at the Slade School of Fine Art, London where she was taught by Alphonse Legros and became friends with the sculptor, Ellen Rope. In 1892-3 Praeger studied in Paris encouraged by Legros and Rope. She then returned to Holywood and rapidly established a busy practice. After renting various studios in Belfast, she built St Brigid's Studio on Hibernia Street in 1914 where she worked until her death in 1954.
By 1907 Praeger had completed her first major commission, the memorial to T. Hamilton for Queen's University. She went on to complete many other architectural works and memorials including 'The Children of Lir', McNaughton School, Bushmills, Co. Antrim (1911-17); and memorials to the founders of Riddell Hall, Queen's University (1926) and Lord Edward Carson Memorial, Belfast Cathedral (1938).
Praeger exhibited frequently, showing work at the Belfast Art Society and Royal Hibernian Academy as well as the Irish Decorative Arts Association, the Arts and Crafts Society of Ireland and was member of the Guild of Irish Art-Workers. Her notable smaller works include: 'The Philosopher'; 'Johnny The Jig'; 'The Waif'; 'These Little Ones'; and 'The Fairy Fountain'.
Praeger was well-connected in the Irish arts and crafts community and was also a member of the Belfasts' Naturalists Club (from 1893). Her many art contacts included the stained the glass artist, Wilhelmina Geddes, the Irish painter and etcher, Cecilia Harrison, and the craftworker, Elinor Hallé.
As well as making sculpture, Praeger was an accomplished children's illustrator. Her books include: 'A Visit to Babyland' (1896); 'Further Doings Of the Three Bold Babes' (1898); 'How They Went To School' (1903); 'Aesop's Fables told to the children by Lena Dalkeith' (1906); 'How They Came Home From School' (1911); 'Billy's Garden Plot' (1918); and 'The Fearful Land Of Forgets' (1921).
Praeger received many honors: she was President of the Royal Ulster Academy, received an honorary doctorate from Queen's University in 1927, and was awarded an MBE in 1939. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Ulster Museum and the National Gallery of Ireland as well as numerous private collections around the world.
