Sculptor, painter, teacher
Little is known of McManus' early life before he began exhibiting at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1835. At that date he was living in Monaghan. In 1836 McManus became a Member of the recently founded Association of Artists in Belfast. Between 1837-44, he worked in London and exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Old Watercolour Society from 1839 to 1843. In 1845 McManus was made headmaster of the Glasgow School of Design, a post he retained until 1849 when he was appointed headmaster of the School of Design in Dublin. McManus was a successful and highly regarded teacher, and introduced evening and day classes for women. He retired in 1863 and was presented with an address and a silver palette by the students in the school. The Royal Dublin Society made him an Honorary Professor of the Fine Arts. After retirement, McManus continued to exhibit with the RHA until his death in 1878.
