Terence Farrell ARHA, RHA
Born 1798
Died 19 March 1876
Active: 1826 - 1865
Country of birth and death: Ireland
Sculptor
Born at Creve, County Longford. He was the first of a family of sculptors; all of Farrell's six sons became sculptors: James (1821-1891); Joseph (1823-1904); Thomas (c.1827-1900); John (1829-1901), Michael (1834-55) and William (1839-after 1913). Terence was brought to Dublin in 1810 by his mother and began studying at the modelling school of the Dublin Society. After this he was a pupil and assistant to Thomas Kirk (c.1819-26).
In the 1830s Terence established a reputation as a portrait sculptor specializing in miniature heads. He also received a number of commissions for church monuments, into which he often incorporated a portrait. Terence's most important patron was Thomas, Earl de Grey and the latter's death in 1859 marked the beginning of a decline in his practice. After creating a memorial to Lady St Germans between 1860-5, Terence seems to have retired. He died ten years later in 1876.
