Born in Barrow in Furness, Lancashire. Studied at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts under Albert Toft. During the early 1900s Gross lived in South Africa where he worked as an architectural carver. In 1914 he relocated to New Zealand. Died in Auckland, New Zealand.
