Country of birth and death: England
Sculptor, wood and stone carver
Born in Haydon, Gloucestershire. He was the son of John Edward Hyett (c.1838-73), a gentleman farmer who left effects valued at about £1,500 on his death. The family was farming at Walton, Cardiff in the early 1870s but after John Edward senior's death, his widow, Ann and the children moved back to her native city of Cheltenham, where she became a lodging house keeper. John Edward was probably apprenticed to one of the local wood and stone carving businesses, such as Richard Boulton, H.H. Martyn or Alfred Emms. Certainly by 1891 he was working in Exeter as a wood and stone carver probably for Harry Hems' workshop as his lodgings were in the same street as the latter's home.
Around 1901, Hyett moved to London and began studying sculpture. He remained in London from this date and worked from St Oswald's Studios adjacent to Harold Brownsword and Herbert Cawood, among others. Hyett established himself as a portrait sculptor and showed regularly at the Royal Academy from 1904 until the year before his death.
Wealth at death: £234 2s. 1d.
Probate date: 22 December 1936
