Born in Fulham, London. Son of Alfred Gatter (born c.1849), cobbler. He probably trained at the Royal College of Art before going on to the Royal Academy Schools in the early 1900s.

Awarded a second prize silver medal of £15 for a set of four models of a figure from the life, in 1906. In the same year he won a one year Landseer Scholarship.
