Born in Whaplode, Holbeach, Lincolnshire. Son of John Gunthorp (born c.1823 in Lincolnshire), carpenter's foreman. He studied at the South London Technical School of Art from about 1880 for four years. Between 1888-99 he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, showing busts, medallions, and ideal works.
