Born in Dublin, St Andrew's (presume parish), Ireland. He studied at South London Technical Art School (SLTAS), Kennington and the Royal Academy Schools (1884). Afterwards he went back to SLTAS to teach and, in 1895, became assistant modelling instructor when William Silver Frith reduced his hours. The two instructors worked side by side for many years until Frith's death in 1924. Tyrrell lived another five years and died in Lambeth.
