Born Lorenz Alma Tadema in Dronrijp, Friesland (Netherlands). Worked in Antwerp and Rome. Moved to England from Paris at the start of the Franco-Prussian War in 1871. Died in Kaiserhof Spa, Wiesbaden, Germany where he was undergoing treatment and was buried with full honours in St. Paul's Cathedral, London.
