Born in Cranbrook, Kent. Probably died in London. His father, Frederick Marshall (born c.1821) is listed as a mason, master, employing 8 men in Cranbrook, Kent in the Census Returns of 1861. Mark Marshall (then c.18) and his brother Frederick (c.16), are listed as mason’s apprentices.
Mark later studied at Lambeth School of Art. He worked in the studio of Robert Wallace Martin (1843-1923), sculptor, modeller and manufacturer, at Pomona House and for Doulton's. In the Census Returns of 1881, his wife Helen (aged 42) also gives her occupation as sculptor. And in the 1891 Census, their daughter Alice (aged 22) is listed as pottery decorator.
