Born on Long Island, New York, USA of British parents. He returned to Scotland with his mother and brother on the death of his father in 1860 (arriving in January 1861). In 1869 he was apprenticed to the architect Horatio Kelson Bromhead. Six years later he moved to London, and worked in Charles George Vinall's architectural office as a draughtsman. In 1882 he joined the office of Philip Webb, and inherited the practice in 1900. Meanwhile he had become a wood carver and taught this subject at the School of Art Wood Carving, the Central School of Arts and Crafts, and the Royal College of Arts.
