Architect, designer
Born in Eton, Berkshire. Sedding trained with the architect, George Edmund Street and was also influenced by the writings of John Ruskin. After entering a brief partnership with his brother, John built up a successful practice focused on ecclesiastical architecture and design. His London office was located in Oxford Street next door to William Morris & Co.
Sedding was assisted in getting started by the connections formed through his wife, Rose Tinling, daughter of Douglas Tinling, canon of Gloucester. He was highly principled and strongly believed architecture was a divinely inspired art intimately bound to craftsmanship. Sedding therefore promoted a close connection between architects and the craftsmen they employed.
His many churches included: Dyfrig's, Cardiff (1885–93; dem. 1961), St Edward's, Netley (1886), St Elwyn's, Hayle, (1886–90), All Saints', Falmouth (1887–90); and St Augustine's, Highgate (1885–8); Holy Trinity, Sloane Street, London (1888-9) (with a lectern by, Henry Hugh Armstead); and Holy Redeemer, Clerkenwell (1887–95). Sedding also designed a wide range of church furnishings from silverware and embroidery to woodwork.
He was a founding member of the Art Workers Guild, lectured and published on architecture, design and gardening. Sedding died at Winsford Vicarage, Somerset. Architect
