Was born in Halifax, Yorkshire. Apprenticed to a lithographic artist at age of 13. Came to London at the age of 21 and worked (unsuccessfully) as a poster artist under John Hassall. Hill was involved in various illustration projects from 1910-1914. He exhibited a drawing at the Royal Academy in 1912.
