Principal stained-glass designer for James Powell & Sons from 1863, a post he retained till c.1890. In 1864 he married Catherine Harriet (Kate) Raven (1839–1924), embroiderer, and sister of landscape painter John Samuel Raven. Stained glass design and painting were Holiday's primary media however he was an immensely versatile artist, illustrating Lewis Carroll's 'Hunting of the Snark', creating sculpture for Frederic Leighton's home, Leighton House ('Jacob's Ladder' exhibited at the Royal Academy, Arts and Craft's Exhibition Society and Liverpool Autumn Exhibition in 1884) and developing a method of relief enamelling. Holiday was a founder-member of the designers' group The Fifteen, the Art Workers Guild, and the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society.
