Born in Deptford. He was the son of Nelson Horatio MacLean (born c.1815 in Scotland), a foreman to a pin manufacturer. Thomas was sent to study in Paris, and enrolled in the studio of Carrier-Belleuse. In 1870 he escaped from the siege of Paris and returned to London. He was married in 1894, a few months before his death.
