Born in Sudbury, Suffolk. She was the daughter of James Chaplin (born c.1819 in St. Lawrence Jewry, London) was a merchant's agent in 1851. He was reported to be an adept wood carver also. Alice Chaplin was brought to the attention of Queen Victoria by Joseph Edgar Boehm and received a number of commissions for portraits of royal pets.
