James Butler RA was a student of Jock Stewart's (as he was known) at Maidstone between 1947 and 1949. Jock persuaded Butler's mother to fund her son's study at St Martins under Stewart and Walter Marsden (1949-51). Butler remarks 'they were excellent tutors and I have great regard for them both.'
