Born in London. He was a member of a highly successful family of architectural sculptors and wood carvers. Eric was the son of William Aumonier Junior (1869-1943), brother of William Whitworth Aumonier (1896-1975) and grandson of the founder of the firm, William Aumonier Senior (1839-1914). His name given at the registration of his birth and at his christening on 4 June 1899 was Aubrey Eric Stacy but he was known in later life as Eric. He married Winifred Maxfield, a silversmith, and in the early 1960s Eric and Freda (as she was called) emigrated to New Zealand to join their daughter Jill who had moved there some years previously.
