Born Potternewton, nr Leeds. 1897-1906 first keeper of the National Gallery of British Art at Millbank (now Tate Britain). 1906-16 Director of the national Gallery (succeeded Sir Edward Poynter). Founded a collection of works by Alfred Stevens at Tate.
