Sculptor, medallist, painter
Born Hartlepool, Durham. He was the eldest son of Francis Jones (c.1846-1918, born in Donaghmoyne, County Monaghan), stonemason and monumental sculptor of West Hartlepool and Middlesbrough. His younger brother, Walter R. (born c.1876 in Hartlepool) was also a monumental sculptor. Francis William initially worked for his father (based on Census Returns of 1891), he then studied in Paris and in London at the National Art Training School during the 1890s.
Doyle Jones worked principally as a sculptor of portraits, however he also made a large number of war memorials. These include Boer War memorials at Middlesbrough (1904), West Hartlepool (1905), Llanelli (1905), Gateshead (1905) and Penrith (1906). After the First World War he made further memorials at Gravesend, Kent and Sutton Coldfield. Doyle Jones died in St. Luke's Hospital, Chelsea. In 1909 he exhibited 'White Horses', a relief in oxidised silver based on a poem by Rudyard Kipling at the Royal Academy, this was originally modelled for Harley Hall near Northallerton in 1908.
There was a short article about Francis William Doyle Jones with a photograph of 'White Horses' in 'The Stone Trades Journal', vol XXVII no. 11, May 1909, p. 340.
