Sculptor, medallist
Born in Hampstead, London. He was the son of Henry Sargant, a barrister and the younger brother of the painter and pioneer of 'true' fresco technique, Mary Sargant-Florence (1857-1954). Sargant studied at the Slade School of Fine Art (1895-6) and then in Florence and Munich (1899-1903) with the German sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand.
Sargant spent most of his career living in Italy and had a studio in Florence (1899–1914 and 1918–37). His preferred medium was marble and he exhibited in London, Paris, Munich (where he was awarded a gold medal in 1904), Vienna and Venice. Sargant's commissions included a memorial to Florence Nightingale in the Church of Santa Croce 1913 and a series of reliefs for the memorial chapel at Oakham School (1925-6) for which his sister contributed some frescoes. He died in Cambridge at the age of ninety.
