Born in Islington, London, he was raised in Oxford. His father was Richard Drury (born c.1834 in Oxfordshire) a beer house keeper (the Great Tom in Oxford). Alfred attended Oxford School of Art and then the National Art Training School, South Kensington (c.1877–1881) where he was taught by F. W. Moody and then Jules Dalou. Between 1881-5 Drury worked in Paris with Dalou, on his return working briefly as an assistant to Edgar Boehm. His first major work was the statue of 'Circe', 1893 (bronze version in Park Square, Leeds, 1894).
Over the course of a long career, he completed many important commissions for architectural and monumental works including eight stone groups for the War Office building, Whitehall (1904–5), representing War, Peace, Truth and Justice, and Victory and Fame and the four female allegories for Vauxhall Bridge, London (c.1905). He had two sons, one of whom was the engraver the engraver (Alfred) Paul Dalou Drury (1903–1987). Died at his home, Lancaster Lodge, 40 Lancaster Road, Wimbledon.

Drury was commissioned to create a 'statue of Sir Joshua Reynolds, P.R.A., to be erected in the courtyard of Burlington House'. Models were submitted by Drury and F. Derwent Wood, and Drury's model was selected in 1917 (see 'Annual Report, 1917', 1918, p. 6).
The Council decided in January 1932 to increase the total sum payable to him for the work from £2,000 to £2,500 (see Royal Academy, 'Annual Report, 1932', 1933, p. 23).
