Born in Grosvenor Square, London. Died at 1 Kensington Gate, Hyde Park, London. Trained in his father's studio and at the Royal Academy Schools (admitted in 1818). From 1820-6 he studied and worked in Italy at his father's instigation. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1837.
