John Graham Lough
Born 8 January 1798
Died 8 April 1876
Active: 1826 - 1870
Sculptor
Born at Black Hedley Port, Greenhead, Shotley, Northumberland. He was apprenticed (c.1815-c.1823) to a stonemason, Jonathan Marshall of Shotley Field. In 1826 Lough entered the Royal Academy Schools. He achieved early success through the support of the painter, Benjamin Robert Haydon who organised exhibitions of the young sculptor's work.
In 1834 Lough and his family moved to Italy where he worked for three years in Rome. On his return he re-established his practice in London and had a long and productive career, although never quite regaining the reputation he had enjoyed prior to moving to Italy. (See Roscoe for a detailed list of works.) Lough created a tondo of the Fall of Phaeton which is installed in the porch of 10 Carlton House Terrace (now part of the British Academy). He died at his home at 42 Harewood Square, London.
